關係副詞where與how的省略問題

我看到有文法書說上述第三句是錯的, 也有文法書說只要先行詞是the place(而不是其它如house的字), 上述第三句是可以的. 不知以美語為母語的人士會怎麼認為?

6) That's the way he handled the problem.
我看到有文法書說上述第四句是錯的, 要改為第五或六句才對(the way和how僅能擇其一).不知以美語為母語的人士又會怎麼認為?

本句的where是當做關係副詞使用；where he was born修飾主要子句That's the place中的先行詞place；
place是地方，所以必須要用表示地方的關係副詞where。(文法書p.319)
2) That's where he was born. (o)
----------------從屬名詞子句

where是當做不定關係副詞使用；where he was born是主詞that的主詞補語。這個句子在口語中要比上一句常用。

That's the place where he was born. 先行詞是place，當然要用關係副詞where=at which標明是在這個地方出生的。關係副詞若省略掉對句子的意思會有影響，所以不宜省略。
That's the house where (=in which) he was born.也是不宜省略。

how是表示manner(方法)的一個副詞，理論上是可以當作關係副詞使用，所以這樣寫也不是錯，但how這個字本身就是表示「什麼方法the way/the method」的意思，再加個the way等於是多餘的，所以現代的文法都沒有將how列為是一個關係副詞，都只是把它列為是一個不定關係副詞(如下述第5題)。
